Notification & Next Steps

First-time Freshmen

Students on academic probation are notified of academic standing through the link to final grades in CatPAWS where an official letter displays and the student is required to initial indicating he/she has read the letter. In addition, student will receive an email if they end the term on Academic Probation, Suspension, or Dismissal. Students earning a 1.75 to a 1.99 GPA following their first semester will be notified of the need to participate in Academic Success Coaching via their academic advisor.

The undergraduate academic catalog states the following student populations must participate in Academic Coaching/Recovery coursework:

  1. First semester freshmen earning a 0.0 to a 1.74 GPA in their first semester and place on academic probation at the end of their first term of enrollment
  2. First semester freshmen students earning a 1.75 to a 1.99 GPA in their first semester of enrollment

Students listed in category 1 above will be enrolled in both courses below. Category 2 students will be enrolled in Academic Success Coaching only.

  • Strategies for Academic Success (one-credit hour, course number 77-151)
  • Academic Success Coaching (one-credit hour, course number 77-150)

Next steps:

  1. Resolve any holds you may have on your account that prevent registration.

  2. Schedule an appointment.

    • First-time, full time freshman should contact their academic advisor to schedule a meeting. If the advisor is not available, please contact the Student Success Center at 660.562.1726 or studentsuccess@jiyutattoo.com.

  3. Adjust your class schedule – discuss necessary adjustments and supersede needs with your academic advisor. Please remember that you may not take more than 16 credit hours, which must include the Academic Success Coaching courses* (2 credit hours) and, if applicable, University Seminar (1 credit hour).

    *Students required to enroll in the Academic Success Coaching program or the Academic Recovery program may be administratively withdrawn for failure to meet program standards or failure to meet program requirements. This is outlined in the administrative withdrawal policy.

    • Required coursework as a condition of continued enrollment.
      University Seminar – 
      Students who failed University Seminar (course number 77-101) must immediately supersede the course.

    • Don't forgot to complete a Petition to Supersede in CatPAWS before re-enrolling in University Seminar.

  4. Consider superseding any other courses in which you earned a C, D or F.

    • Superseding often expedites a return to good academic standing (see GPA calculation example View PDF and use the GPA calculator in your Degree Audit on CatPAWS) but may have implications on the number of hours completed to meet scholarship requirements. Please discuss this with your academic advisor.

    • You must complete an electronic Petition to supersede for any courses you are re-taking.

  5. Open and honest communication with your academic advisor regarding your plans is important.

First-time Transfer

First-time transfer students who are placed on probation at the end of their first term of enrollment at Northwest are required to enroll in 77-150 Academic Success Coaching (1 credit hour) as outlined in the undergraduate academic catalog. Continuing Students

Students are notified of academic standing through the link to final grades in CatPAWS where an official letter displays and the student is required to initial indicating he/she has read the letter. In addition, student will receive an email if they end the term on Academic Probation, Suspension, or Dismissal. Students with an academic standing classification of academic probation, suspension, or dismissal are encouraged to develop an academic recovery plan using the step-by-step guidance as indicated below for each of these classifications.

Next steps for students on Academic Probation:

  2. Schedule an appointment.

    • Continuing students should contact their academic advisor to schedule a meeting. If the advisor is not available, please contact the Student Success Center at 660.562.1726 or studentsuccess@jiyutattoo.com.

  3. Adjust your class schedule according to supersede needs and remember that you may not take more than 16 credit hours.
